It seemed like Benfica would cruise to an easy win, but the second half proved more challenging. Academica opened the second half with a goal in which Butt was badly beaten. The usual substitute goalie for Benfica has not been effective the few times he has been called to start the game. Benfica would suffer some pressure from Academic after the 2 to 1, but in the end Benfica would seal the win with another goal by Cardozo.
The Paraguayan has been hot as of late.
As expected Camacho rested a few of the regular starters for this game. He rested Quim, Katsouranis, and Rui Costa. Edcarlos was a started on defense, Bynia and Nuno Assis at midfield, and Nuno Gomes paired with Cardozo up front. Di Maria was also a starter and would leave the game at the 76 minute mark to give playing time to Freddy Adu.
Although Di Maria is a more know player than Adu, and from a much better school of soccer, Di Maria is from Argentina, a country known to have great players, the American Adu has shown that he deserves more playing time than Di Maria.
This weekend Portuguese League play returns and Benfica will play an away game at Belenenses.

First off, I can only watch the highlights on the internet and have not had the opportunity to watch a full match. That said, I can only assume what i read on the internet. I am a die hard Adu fan and obviously want him to touch the pitch before injury time, but don’t you think Camacho was threatened by Di Maria’s wandering interests earlier this year? Man U and Arsenal? I’d probably play him over Adu in an effort to keep him on the team, but if Wenger pursues him further, Di Maria’s as good as gone in a year, and you might as well play someone who will stay. . . LIKE ADU!

I wish I could look into Camacho’s mind and understand why he does not play Adu more. Maybe he feels he has too much invested in Di Maria and Freddy has time. Maybe there is a biase against U.S. players in general. I hope not, but the kid needs a fair break with Benfica.
If not…I woul recommend he test other waters during the summer transfer window.

Most people in Portugal agree that at this point Adu should be getting more minutes than Di Maria.
What really scares me is the fact that Camacho wants new players in December (mostly on loan), and if that happens both Di Maria and Adu will get a lot less playing time.
