Benfica FC news from the States – Freddy Adu is Coming

This time the news of a SL Benfica transfer is coming from the USA. There are a couple of Portuguese papers also reporting the possible transfer of Freddy Adu to Benfica, but all of them are quoting sources from the US.

The news was all over the blogosphere in the States, we have Soccer by Ives posting about it,   City Pages  also briefly mentions the transfer in their wrap-up of the Galaxy game.  The Offside, a popular soccer blog, was also reporting the  end of the era of Adu in the MLS.

I  first heard of Freddy Adu almost three years ago, but for all the talk about him, he kept a relatively low profile in the MLS.  If not for the good showing he gave in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup last week we probably wouldn´t be talking about him.  However positive a move it would be for Freddy to come to Europe, I don´t think we will be seeing him in Portugal any time soon.  The MLS asking price for Adu of around $7.5 is pretty steep for Benfica, and this season the competition for playing time at Benfica will also be tight.  freddy aduIf all this wasn´t enough, SL Benfica is not usually a developing ground for young talents.  This has begun to change as of recently, but Benfica is not at the point yet where they can spend 5 million Euros on a player with the hopes of turning him into a greater star.

I wish Freddy Adu all the luck in the world, especially since I enjoy watching the US National team play  and expect to see him on the main squad any day, but I really do not think Adu is going to come to Benfica any time soon.

Adu is negotiating with Benfica after MLS, Portugese power, agree to $2-million transfer fee.

With four Major League Soccer and four appearances for the United States in youth age-group world championships, the 18-year-old Freddy Adu appears to be on the brink of taking his career to Europe.
