Benfica FC crushes Boavista 6 to 1

Such a huge win for Benfica last Sunday.  A 6 - 1 home win against Boavista, who just happens to be one of the hardest teams to beat at Stadium of Light.

Benfica made all their scoring chances count for this game, and even had time to miss a penalty shot (Bergessio).  Benfica played a solid game all around, and went up 1 to 0.  Boavista would however tie the game playing with less one player and it seemed things could get complicated.  But Benfica would take hold of the game and pressured Boavista to defending.  As the pressure mounted so did the scoring opportunities and Benfica would quickly go back up on the score board.

Striker Cardozo scored the first of the game at the 18 minute mark, and Nuno Gomes would score two times.  It could have been three if he had taken the second penalty shot.  Cardozo left the game early in what seemed like a serious injury, and should be out about two weeks, but in time for Benfica´s next Portuguese League match.  New comers Maxi Pereira and Cristian Rodriguez would put Benfica up 2  and 3 to 1 respectively in a short 4 minute time span.

This was a record win for Benfica at the new Stadium, in what turned out to be a great Sunday.  Porto, after being up 2 to 0 at Amadora ended up allowing a tie in the final four minutes of the game.  Benfica is now only 4 points out.  Sporting suffered a 3 to 0 loss at Braga and fell further behind.

Portuguese League play will now stop for two weeks for National Team play.
