After coming to an agreement with the MLS for the transfer of Freddy Adu, Benfica has reportedly made a counteroffer to Adu that he has already accepted. The transfer fee for the rights of Freddy were a reported $2 million, and although Freddy was initially not keen on coming to Benfica he has apparently changed his mind. A source close to the player said that “It’s 99 percent done — the deal is very good”. He should be traveling to Lisbon in a few days to ink the deal. Freddy Adu is a promising young player that can play anywhere on the front, be it right, left, or at center. He is still regarded as a potential future superstar, but he has disappointed over the last three years. Asuming he gets some playing time in SL Benfica, this could be a very good move for Adu, since it will take some of the pressure off of a player that I first heard about when he was only 14 years old.
It is not expected that Freddy Adu step in right away, especially since SL Benfica has also signed two other young stars (Di María and Andrés Diáz) to help fill the role previously held be Simão Sabrosa. I for one will be glad to see a US player playing for Benfica when I go see the games this year at “Stadium Luz”
I am also glad to see that Benfica is signing young rising stars, something that Joe Berardo said should be Benfica´s strategy for the future. Is this already influence from Benfica´s future “boss”?
