Benfica beats Celtic on a late Cardozo goal

Its was just one of those games Wednesday against Celtic.  Benfica was the better team from start to finish, and the only thing late in coming was the goal.  After a couple of great saves by Celtic goalie Artur Boruc, and after having sent the ball against the posts for two times, Benfica got its goal with only two minutes left in regulation.

The fist half of the game was actually pretty even between the two teams, but the second half was all Benfica.  Oscar Cardozo had four great chances before finally scoring on his fifth try.  After a very intense first 15 minutes in the second half, Benfica started losing some steam.  Shortly after Camacho takes our Bergessio and Nuno Assis to put in Freddy Adu and Di Maria. The Cardozo goal would come from a great pass by Di Maria.  Overall the second half of the game was one of the best since Camacho took over as head coach.

With this win Benfica is back in the game in Group D, and still has a chance of passing to the next phase of Champions League play.  Benfica will need to get a win in the next game against Celtic at Celtic Park.  Celtic is a very tough team at home, and Benfica lost there last year by 3 to 1.  The only loss I can remember Celtic having at home in recent years for UEFA play was against Barcelona.  This season Celtic has already beat AC Milan in Glasgow. Group D is stil wide open for all four teams, but I would be very surprised if Milan didn´t pass, so its down to 3 teams for that last spot.

While it won´t be easy to defeat Celtic at home, this win brings new life to Benfica that will hopefully carry over into next Sunday´s game against Maritimo for the Portuguese League.
